Description

The rebec is a three-stringed bowed instrument with European ancestry. It is 23 inches long with a scale length of 12.5 inches. The optimal tuning for this Alto Rebec is G below middle C, D above middle C, and A above middle C.

It is played resting on the shoulder, the chest, or tucked in the armpit. This ancient instrument comes with a rosewood fingerboard, bow, and padded gig bag. It measures 23 inches long by 5 1/2 inches wide by 4 1/2 inches deep (including the bridge). The bow is 27 1/2 inches long.

Please note: Rebecs are de-tuned, and the bridge is removed prior to shipment to reduce the risk of damage to the instrument. Before you can play the instrument, you will need to set the bridge in place and then tune it. You will also need to prepare the bow. The bridge is free-floating and will be held in place by the tension of the strings. To determine the correct placement of the bridge, place the three strings into the notches of the bridge and stand the bridge on the face of the soundboard between the two sound holes. Then measure from the bottom of the nut to the front of the bridge; the measurement should be 13 inches. The bridge should be perpendicular to the strings, so the measurement should be 13 inches under each string. Be cautious that the bridge does not move while you are tuning.
