The Medieval Pipe has a straight bore and an open-ended bell, producing a softer sound than the rauschpfeife but louder than the corn amuse. The MID-EAST Straight Cromorne Medieval Pipe is closely related to the rauschpfeife, and the corn amuse, but there are significant differences. The rauschpfeife stands out among Renaissance wind cap instruments due to its conical bore, which gives it a powerful voice. The corn amuse shares a similar shape with the Medieval Pipe, but its bell has a closed end. This design allows sound to escape through the side holes of the bell, resulting in a softer sound.
The primary technique in playing wind cap instruments is to maintain a strong breath pressure to keep the reed vibrating and the instrument in tune. This breath pressure is considerably stronger compared to the flute and recorder.
