The Cuica, a 5” x 7” instrument crafted from steel-plated brass with goatskin head, is also known as a puita, boi, or onca. Cuica, in various forms, are distributed globally, but they hold a special significance in Brazilian Samba music.
Originating from Africa, the Cuica is believed to have been used as a call for male lions due to its sound resembling the roar of the female lioness. Although lions may not be readily available, the Cuica can still produce remarkable sounds, making it a versatile instrument for musical expression.
