This Native American Style flute is end blown with six finger holes. It is composed of two parts: the pipe body and the bird or saddle block. The flow of air is controlled by sliding the bird over the top opening. A minor adjustment in pitch can be made by moving the bird forward (sharpening pitch) or backward (flattening pitch). However, it is important to ensure that the opening is not completely closed. These flutes are not designed to be concert-tuned; instead, they are designed to be in tune with themselves. The music of the Native American Style Flute is intended to be inspirational and personal, with a lovely, open, and ethereal sound. The lowest note is the F#, which is played with all holes covered.
