Traditional Mountain Dulcimer Stringing:

Traditionally, mountain dulcimers were constructed with three strings, evenly spaced: a melody string, a middle string, and a bass string. Later developments introduced a four-string dulcimer by altering the string spacing and doubling the melody string. This modification increased the volume of the melody line. Contemporary dulcimers, such as the Grace model, offer additional notches on the nut, allowing for personalized string patterns. The interior doubled melody string can be completely removed to revert to the traditional three-string configuration. Alternatively, the interior melody string and the middle string can be moved over one notch to create equal spacing between all four strings.
