The Cutaway Dulcimer is a traditional mountain dulcimer with a unique design that sets it apart. It features a narrow upper bout, allowing guitar-style fingering, and a vaulted fret board that enhances its responsive sound. The soundboard is crafted from spruce, giving it a warm and resonant tone, while the back, sides, and fret board are made of rosewood.
The dulcimer’s scroll-carved peghead houses four tuners, each with a 4:1 gear ratio, providing a wide range of tunings. While many tunings are compatible, the traditional DAD tuning is recommended for ease of play.
Traditionally, mountain dulcimers had three strings: a melody string, a middle string, and a bass string. Later developments led to the creation of a four-string dulcimer by altering the string spacing and doubling the melody string. This modification increased the volume of the melody line. Contemporary dulcimers, including the Cutaway Dulcimer, offer additional notches on the nut, allowing for more personalized string patterns. The inside doubled melody string can be completely removed to revert to the traditional three-string configuration. Alternatively, the inside melody string and the middle string can be moved over one notch to create equal spacing between all four strings.
