Traditionally, mountain dulcimers were constructed with three, equally spaced strings: a melody string, a middle string, and a bass string. Later developments resulted in the creation of a four-string dulcimer by altering the string spacing and doubling the melody string. This modification enhanced the volume of the melody line. Contemporary dulcimers, such as the one in question, feature additional notches on the nut, enabling the customization of string patterns. The interior doubled melody string can be completely removed to restore the traditional three-string configuration. Alternatively, the interior melody string and the middle string can be moved over one notch to create an equal spacing between all four strings.
