History and Tuning:
Originating in Eastern Europe during the early Middle Ages, Klezmer music emerged from the secularization of Jewish worship music. Klezmorim, Jewish troubadours, incorporated Klezmer music into weddings and other celebratory occasions. Over time, Klezmer music blended with various cultural influences, including Slavonic, Greek, Turkish, Gypsy, and even American jazz rhythms.
For a more authentic tuning, one can draw inspiration from Judaic worship music, where the lyre accompanied the singing of the Chazzan, also known as a Cantor. This style of tuning utilizes the Chazzanut mode, commencing with the bass strings (largest strings) in the following pattern: D E F G# A B C D E F.
Two alternative tunings that are suitable for singers comfortable in the key of G are:
1. (Bass to Treble): E F# G A B C D E F# G
2. (Bass to Treble): D E F# G A B C D E F# (E serves as the tonic)
It is important to note that both tunings result in the same notes, but the second tuning begins on D instead of E. Ultimately, the choice of tuning should align with the singer’s preference and the desired musical expression.
