The Hammered Dulcimer, renowned for its exquisite and resonant sound, has captivated audiences worldwide for centuries. Originating in the Middle East, its name derives from the Latin word “dulcis” and the Greek word “melos,” aptly translating to “Sweet Tune.”
Physical Dimensions:
The instrument measures 32 inches in length, 3.75 inches in height, and 12 inches in width.
Body Construction:
The instrument’s base is crafted from multi-layered Rosewood, featuring a rear opening that serves as a convenient carrying handle. The sides are meticulously crafted from genuine Rosewood.
Soundboard:
The soundboard, meticulously crafted from light-coloured hardwood, may vary slightly from the image. It encompasses a single sound hole adorned with a Rosewood rosette, intricately designed with a vine and leaf pattern.
Nut and Tuning Mechanisms:
The instrument is equipped with two Rosewood nuts, strategically positioned on each side. The tuning mechanism comprises 19 metal tuning pegs threaded into the body, while 19 metal end pegs are strategically positioned opposite the tuning pegs.
Bridge:
The Rosewood bridges feature color-coded saddles on their tops, facilitating ease of play. For optimal tuning, the distance between the left nut and the first bridge at the top should be 0.6 inches (16 mm), while the distance between the left nut and the first bridge at the bottom should be 0.98 inches (24.9 mm).
Strings:
This hammered dulcimer is equipped with 10/9 strings, comprising 10 single strings crossing the treble bridge on the left and 9 single strings crossing the bass bridge on the right. Each string is spaced 1 inch apart, and the included “T”-shaped tuning tool enables precise string adjustment. Altogether, the instrument boasts 19 metal strings.
