The Wildwood Dulcimer is a delightful instrument that combines the rich sound of a mountain dulcimer with a touch of banjo twang. Its unique body style enables it to be played like a guitar, deviating from the traditional “flat in the lap” position of the mountain dulcimer. The teardrop spruce soundboard, adorned with two F-shaped sound holes, stands out in contrast to the long, thin RED CEDAR fingerboard.
Measuring 34 1/2 inches in length, 7 1/8 inches in width, and 2 1/4 inches in height, the Wildwood Dulcimer boasts a neck width of 1 3/8 inches. It features four string courses, comprising loop-end strings: a wound string at the top, an unwound centre string, and two unwound strings tuned in unison at the bottom.
The carved scroll peghead incorporates a gold-coloured geared 4:1 banjo-style tuner, allowing for a wide range of tunings. However, we recommend the traditional DADD tuning for ease of play. The frets are arranged in a diatonic scale, similar to an Appalachian Mountain dulcimer. Notably, the instrument includes an infamous “6 1/2” fret positioned just below the octave position, enabling play in Ionian mode. The bridge to nut distance is 24 1/2 inches.
